For the eighth round of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, the teams made the annual trip to the Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Connecticut.  The semi-banked half mile track has hosted NASCAR events since 1959.  For the past few years, the track has hosted two Whelen Modified events a year.  This race, the “Call Before You Dig 811 150”, went green Saturday night with New Hampshire winner, Bobby Santos on the pole. However, it was outside pole sitter, Woody Pitkat who took the lead on the start.

The race’s only yellow flag came out on lap 76 for Patrick Emerling. His ‘07 car come to a stop at the entrance of turn three.  During the caution, the whole field came down pit road. Donny Lia was first off pit road with Ryan Preece behind him. Most teams changed three tires. On the lap 82 restart, Preece took the lead away from Woody Pitkat, who lead so many of the first 75 laps, but fell to eighth after the pitstops.

Ryan Preece fell back as Ron Silk and Donny Lia battled for the lead. Meanwhile, Woody Pitkat worked his way through the field to second. Pitkat rapidly caught leader Ron Silk by two tenths of a lap and breezed past to retake the top spot on lap 115. He never looked back. Pitkat, who has never won in the Whelen Modified Tour, finally scores his first victory!  He has had over 70 wins at the track in other divisions and can now call himself a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour winner. Ron Silk finished second, Donny Lia third, Doug Coby forth, and Eric Goodale round out the top five.

The next NWMT event will be Aug. 13 from Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park also in Connecticut.
