Wheldon Still Giving Back
The Wheldon name is still making an impact on the racing community. This time, it's Susie Wheldon's turn to make the round of tv interviews, promoting a cause that was near and dear to Dan's heart, Alzheimer. Dan's mother is suffering from Alzheimer. Before his untimely death, he was a huge proponent for raising money and awareness for this debilitating disease.
Saturday was the 1st Annual Dan Wheldon Pro-Am Karting Challenge, held at New Castle Motorsports Park in New Castle, Indiana. Dubbed as one of the best go-kart tracks in the nation, yesterday it was simply a playground to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association. IndyCar stars, other professional drivers, and amateurs took to the track to put on a show for the fans. Some of the drivers included; Ed Carpenter, Sage Karam, Conor Daly, Alex Tagliani, Scott Dixon, James Hinchcliffe, Sebastian Savaadra, Marino Franchitti, Holly Wheldon (Dan's sister), Clive Wheldon (Dan's father), JR Hildebrand, Simon Pagenaud, Martin Plowman, and Josef Newgarden. There were 4, 25 minute segments. Where your kart finished that segment is where it started in the next. Once the karts got rolling, I think rules went out the window. To raise more money, they adapted a "buy your way back on the lead lap rule." However many laps down your kart was, your team could donate $100 per lap to get back on the lead lap. Many teams took advantage of this. Team Target at one point was 11 laps down and donated $1,100 to get back on the lead lap.
Of course, it was all for a good cause. This event ended up raising $100,000.
It was cold. It was cloudy. It was windy. Regardless, there had to have been upwards to 200 people standing outside watching these drivers battle each other. It was fun seeing our heroes in little go-karts, going back to some of their roots. It was nice to see them all come together to remember Dan and continue to raise awareness for a cause that still impacts his family today. Once you're in the IndyCar family, you're always in the IndyCar family.
